Polo carnival draws a crowd BY NADINE MORTON, 08 May, 2012 04:00 AM

GOOD weather and the promise of fast and furious polo resulted in more than 1500 people flocking to Mandurama for the annual Millamolong Polo Carnival on Saturday.

More than 250 horses, 48 players and 12 teams competed for top honours at the 2012 carnival, sponsored by John Davis Volvo.

Millamolong Polo Club president Eugene Marais said there was top-class polo along with a range of family activities that kept the crowd entertained well into the evening.

“Over 1500 people lined the field on Saturday for a day of aggressive polo and fun family activities,” he said.

Along with the fast-paced polo heats on Saturday crowds were entertained by a range of novelty events.

The varsity bicycle polo was a huge hit with the crowds, according commentator James Darmody.

Teams from Charles Sturt University in Orange and Wagga Wagga ditched hooves for pedals in the inaugural match that thrilled the crowds.

“The great spills and fierce competition made for fantastic entertainment for the huge crowd on the sideline,” Mr Darmody said.

“After the hype of the game we anticipate a great battle for next year ... we already know that teams are wanting to come back so watch this space.”

Also a huge hit was the Volvo car versus horse race, and the horse hit back after a crushing defeat in 2011.

This year the Helicruz Helicopter was added to the race, with all three modes of transport competing for the trophy and, after a brave battle, the horse, ridden by Millamolong Stripes’ Richard Connell, came in first.

The carnival is set to return next year with more top-class polo and family fun.
