From the Scone Polo Club website: Muswellbrook Cup Polo finals a perfect tribute.

The “Mother’s Day" final of the Muswellbrook Cup Polo Tournament at the Gundy Grounds was a great spectacle . The weather was perfect and the games were hard and furious. It was a great tribute to the late John Bell and many of the Muswellbrook Polo Club friends and families that came to watch.

Close to 200 spectators enjoyed the special lunch and the atmosphere at the Club. The kids were playing bike polo and enjoying the pony rides as their fathers battled it out on the polo paddock.

The Muswellbrook Challenge Cup was presented by Her Excellency Lady Denman to the Muswellbrook Polo Club 100 years ago in May 1913. The Club was formed originally by Donald Macintyre when he returned from England in 1887. He invited ER (Reg) White ( Martindale), Jack Campbell (St Heliers) and Donald Cracknall (Kayuga) to play on the flats at Kayuga along with fellow members H. Cox, P Shannon, Walter White, Ben Darley, Edward Higgins, RT Keys, W Everest and JC White.

The Muswellbrook Club sold their grounds in the early 2000’s and have since then contributed greatly to the purchase of new grounds on Dartbrook Road in 2011 by The Scone Polo Club.

As a lasting tribute and recognition of the Muswellbrook Polo Club’s support the Scone Polo Club host the Muswellbrook Cup Tournament every year. The same magnificent silver Cup which was presented in 1913 was presented to this year’s winners ; Ellerston Black - Guy Kirkpatrick (Captain), Jim Gilmore, Jeff Fisher and Angus Kelly.

The JD Bell trophy for the best played pony went to Guy Kirkpatrick’s gelding Tartan and the John Gilder Trophy for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) also went to Guy Kirkpatrick.
