Results from the JAMIE ASHTON MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT AND WOMEN'S CLUB CHALLENGE: Town and Country Polo Club - 23 & 24 October

With twenty three teams in the draw and a visiting New Zealand women's team to compete in Town and Country's inaugural Women's Club Challenge, it promised to be a huge weekend. However, persistent rain from Saturday night through Sunday unfortunately resulted in the cancellation of all of Sunday games. Results from the first two ladies' matches, played on Friday and Saturday, are as follows:

Town and Country ICFrith Blue (Jessica Kirkpatrick, Katie Grimmond, Claire Brougham, Marlene MacFarlane) beat South Island Polo Association (Ashley MacKenzie, Tiki Brown, Angela Norrie, Maddy Rankin)

Town and Country ICFrith White (Lauren Stevenson, Victoria Doolin, Claire Brougham, Amanda Jansen) beat South Island Polo Association (as above)

Next tournament will be the Hector King 10-Goal Championships at Windsor Polo Club, Richmond, on 28 to 31 October. There will be 10-goal, 6-goal, 4-goal and 0-goal. Spectators will be very welcome every day of the tournament.

TOWN AND COUNTRY TOURNAMENT: Muddy Flats Polo Grounds - 9 & 10 October

Following the recent rain, most fields were considered too wet to use, so, regrettably, the tournament's C- and D-grades had to be cancelled and all A- and B-grade games were played on one field. The schedule ran like clockwork and the weather was kind, so all twelve games on the draw went ahead as planned.

A Grade (10 goal): Windsor (David Rothwell, Adam Tolhurst, Rob Ballard, Mark Tolhurst) beat Town and Country (Hamish Kelly, Richard Rawlings, Andrew Williams, Brendan Fahey)

Best playing pony prize was awarded to Rob Ballard's 'Chica'.

B Grade (4 goal) Division One: Town and Country B (Lisa Fahey, Ed Matthies, Rob Ballard, Jo Reid) beat Pyrmont (Vic Lewis, Juan Maizcasas, Archie Voorspuy, Andrew Williams)

B Grade (4 goal): Division Two: Riverlands (Ferdinand Furch, Marty Ingham, Adam Meally, John Francis) beat Town and Country D (Katie Grimmond, Danny Kerry, Greg Ballard, Jim Rawlings)

Next tournament will be hosted by WINDSOR POLO CLUB at their grounds on Old Kurrajong Road, Richmond, on 16 & 17 October. There will be 10-goal, 4-goal and 0-goal grades and spectators are very welcome on both days (with free entry).

Many thanks.

WOMEN'S CLUB CHALLENGE 2010

In January 2010, Town & Country sent a women's team to Christchurch, New Zealand to take on a squad selected by the South Island Polo Association.

The New Zealanders have accepted our invitation to continue the Club Challenge in Australia, at a tournament that will coincide with the Town & Country Spring 10 goal weekend.

Three teams will take on the Kiwis on 22, 23 & 24 October, with the main test match taking place on the Sunday, and players will be selected by Glen Gilmore during his women's polo clinic on 24 September.

During the lead up to the Club Challenge, the selected players will be encourage to compete in sponsored 0 goal teams; this will provide valuable experience playing as an all female side and in the positions normally assumed by the stronger male players on a mixed team. They will also be expected to promote their sponsors within the polo fraternity and the local community and help to enhance the profile of women's polo.

A number of sponsorships have been secured, for the provision of chukka fees, team shirts, clinic subsidy, horse feed etc.

Town & Country hopes very much to contribute to the development of women's polo, whilst establishing a strong & competitive relationship with the South Island Polo Association and other clubs/organisations around the world with a flourishing female membership. Our aim is to enable more Town & Country members to play overseas and to develop long lasting alliances with our sponsors at home.
