Richard Walker Tribute E booklet

le Richard Walker

It is with deep sadness, that we hear the passing of an Australian Polo great, Richard Walker. Richard was inducted into the Australian Polo Hall of Fame in 2022.

Richard had a stellar career that included 17 appearances for Australia of which he captained the Australian team three times, making him the second most capped player in history. He carries the test cap number 34.

Among Richard’s vast rollcall of victories, the Countess of Dudley Cup stands out with nine wins. Richard also won the Australasian Gold Cup on seven occasions.

In the 1970’s Richard dominated in the 3-aside test matches played under lights at the old Sydney Royal Showgrounds when 20,000 screaming spectators turned the stadium into a cauldron and the polo was fierce. He was also a member of the famous Australian Emus team that toured New Zealand in 1972.

Sinclair Hill described Richard as “one of the greatest players in Australian polo history.”

“Richard is a great character and always stood his ground both on and off the field.”

“Richard certainly exerted great influence over the sport during his time in the game through his immense strength of character.”

His contribution to polo in Australia was enormous and he will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are very much with his family at this time.
